05/04/2004 Martin Scorsese's The Blues - British transmission dates, at last
Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues, the acclaimed TV series shown on PBS in the USA last September, has finally made it onto the UK schedules: it starts on BBC4 on Thursday 15 April. The choice of BBC4, the digital terrestrial channel available only to the minority of viewers with Freeview boxes, indicates that the series is not expected to draw a mass audience. Sound judgment, I'd say: the blues becomes less and less relevant every year. Since the 1960s heyday, very little has been produced to suggest that it's a living genre. Despite my own affection for the blues, I don't see many signs of under-45s expressing much interest. For UK blues fans who haven't yet invested in a Freeview set top box, this series alone is worth the expenditure (c£60). BBC4, in particular, is a splendid channel. Its consistently outstanding programming, with wide-ranging quality music, makes it Television for Grown-Ups. But let's hope that the BBC don't do what they did with the Ken Burns Jazz series in 2001 (viz hack it). The accompanying product promo is now in full swing, with Snapper handling the DVD series (c£11 per programme x 7) and a beautifully packaged single artist series of 25 CDs (www.snappermusic.com) complementing the official CD series available on import. The Snapper CDs have been selling at Fopp at £5 each.
