Mozart: pure genius

The final instalment in the three-part Genius of Mozart series, airing tonight at 9pm on BBC 2 television, completes a trio of revealing docudramas, packed with insights.

The big questions have been raised and answered by a well-written narrative and some well-chosen music: how good was Mozza? Why? Was the genius purely natural, or did he have to work on it?

Though I'm not a big fan of musical biography, this series, exceptionally, has convinced me that it can be a valid activity. The films have made the case that Mozart was uniquely able to explore the full range of emotions - like Shakespeare, he helped define the modern concept of humanity - only because he had walked the walk, as a human being with a full and varied emotional life.

The Genius of Mozart will be coming soon to a TV station near you. You should catch it: it's a splendid introduction to one of Music for Grown-Ups' favourites.
