30/03/2004 Joss Stone - The Soul Sessions
by Diana De Roo
Stone, a pretty 16 year old girl from Devon, England, reworks some of the soul classics and gets away with it - easily. It's a relief to hear her after all the pseudo R&B making it to the charts nowadays. OK, she's not the new Aretha Franklin, but what a voice the girl has. She gets help from soul legend Betty Wright, as well as Angie Stone, The Roots, Latimore, Timmy Thomas, Willie "Little Beaver" Hale and others. Just listen to The Chokin' Kind. And weep. It's a great version, the strongest tune on the CD. I also like her version of 'Some Kind Of Wonderful'. There's one pop song on the CD, 'I Had A Dream' (Lovin' Spoonful) and she even excels with that. She makes The White Stripes song, 'Fell In Love With A Girl', into her own, changing the genders to 'Fell In Love With A Boy'. 'Super Duper Love' is my favourite cleaning song - if I were a man, I'd sure be digging on Ms Stone. Everybody knows 'All The King's Horses'. Here in Belgium, it's getting a lot of airplay and the weird thing is that it's played on all the radio stations - pop/rock/Radio 1/Radio 2 - that's doesn't happen very often. Another favourite of mine is 'Dirty Man'. OK, Laura Lee's version is better - because Stone's version lacks the hate/venom of ageing, beaten-up women. One dislike - I could have done without 'For The Love Of You' (Isley Brothers). Don't download this album - buy it! I can hardly wait for Soul Sessions 2.
