18/03/2004 Music from Hell, part 1
On a long car journey yesterday, I idly flicked through the channels on the radio, searching vainly for music suitable for grown-ups. It was a largely fruitless task. Radio 3 is usually the banker, but it can become a bit repetitive. Several stations that probably think they're supplying the grown-ups market are many miles wide of the mark. Classic FM plays "Smooth Classics", designed to soothe the brows of its middlebrow, middle aged, middle class listeners. It's like listening to treacle. Awful. I'd rather play golf. Not to be out-smoothed, Jazz FM (now there's a misnomer) advertises itself as "The Home of Smooth Jazz". And it plays a succession of unengaging, shockingly bland pop. At least the NW England variant of the station has had the decency to change its name to Smooth FM. A third station, Magic FM, was peddling "Mellow Magic" - Sting's Fields of Barley, with its lazy, loping intro, being fairly typical. (Don't get me wrong - I regard Sting as a top musician, but not on this type of schlock). Smooth. Mellow. Unchallenging. Predictable. Tedious. Uninventive. Music from Hell. Gerry Smith
