Blues Legends - by a man who knows

As I start to wonder whether the Scorsese blues series aired on PBS last autumn will ever get a screening here, I can at least look forward to another new blues series - by a man who's probably forgotten more about the blues than any ten other aficionados have ever known.

To music fans of a certain age, Paul Jones is best remembered as the hunky front man of fringe-geeky pop combo Manfred Mann, who had numerous pop chart hits in the mid-'60s, including some frothy Dylan covers.

But Jones deserves forgiveness for youthful transgressions. He's done his penance by since devoting himself to the blues, notably as singer with The Blues Band, but also as an enviably adept broadcaster, with long-running shows, aimed at blues purists, on BBC Radio 2 and Jazz FM.

His new series of Blues Legends runs for six weeks from Wednesday 31 March at 10pm on BBC Radio 2. It kicks off with T-Bone Walker, and then covers Dinah Washington (eh?), Little Walter, Lightnin' Hopkins, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Big Bill Broonzy.

An eclectic collection, and Jones is certain to have something very interesting to say about them all. Recommended.
