09/03/2004 Discounted music books - and a Rolling Stones heritage attraction
If you're in the market for key music books at heavily discounted prices, you should try Helter Skelter, London's only specialist popular music book shop, in Denmark Street - London's Tin Pan Alley - opposite Foyle's, on Charing Cross Road. I was in last weekend and picked up the recently published hardback edition of Dylan's Visions of Sin, by Christopher Ricks for £10 (reduced from £25) and a new biog of Louis Armstrong (£12, reduced to £5). Other bargains on view included Johnny Rogan's massive hardback Neil Young biog (selling at a giveaway £5, down from £25), and excellent recent Miles Davis books by John Szwed and Paul Tingen. I already have those last three - damnation. I've been shopping at Helter Skelter for years - it's always a "must-visit" for me when in central London; its depth of stock is second to none. And Helter Skelter does mail order, shipping globally. The shop is located in the very room where the Rolling Stones recorded their eponymous first album - known then as Regent Studios - so it's also worth a visit by Stones/rock fans as a music heritage attraction.
