09/03/2004 World-class opera from the Met - free
The winter season of world-class opera broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York just keeps getting better and better. Last Saturday's La Traviata equalled the earlier Verdi work, a magnificent Rigoletto reviewed here a couple of weeks ago. Renee Fleming, the American soprano currently vying with Romanian Angela Gheorghiu for the title of number one diva, starred as a spirited Violetta. Fleming's performance was breathtaking. This Saturday's live broadcast, Mozart's great Don Giovanni, with baritone Thomas Hampson in the title role, promises to be equally impressive. It starts, as usual, at 1830 GMT on BBC Radio 3 (and, presumably, one hour later on those continental European classical stations which also take the EBU relay from New York). This Met series is unmissable: great art - superbly performed. In glorious stereo hi-fi. Free.
