25/02/2004 Best-selling singles artists - a surprising 16% are musicians for grown-ups
A surprising eight of the top 50 singles artists in Britain (16%) can reasonably be regarded as musicians for grown-ups: proof, if it were needed, that great music can be found in every genre, even the British pop charts. Occasionally, just occasionally, popular taste coincides with critical credibility. Channel 4's ranking of the 50 top-selling singles artists over the last 50 years, featured in Sunday's The Ultimate Pop Star, put Cliff Richard (over 20m singles sold) just ahead of The Beatles and Elvis. These three were well ahead of fourth-placed Madonna (14.5m). Ranked musicians who are clearly worth the attention of grown-ups were: Elvis (ranked 3 by singles sales in the UK), Bowie (10), The Stones (12), The Police (30), Everly Brothers(42) and Sinatra (49). You could also make a reasonable case for The Beatles (2) and Madonna (4). Possibly even stretch the list to include Blondie (24). But what about the other 41 musicians in the ranked list? Queen? Rod Stewart? U2? Jacko? You serious? Gerry Smith
