24/02/2004 The Grey Album: the Beatles go hip-hop
The Grey Album, by Atlanta-based DJ/Producer Danger Mouse, combines the vocals from Jay-Z's acclaimed hip-hop Black Album of November 2003 with tunes and beats from The Beatles' eponymous album (aka the White Album). It's great fun - engagingly tuneful, and lyrically very witty - and stands up to repeated listening all day, even if the Beatles don't really do it for you. It's far more hip-hop than Beatles. But, like much hip-hop, it's not for squeamish, easily-offended liberals - "niggers, bitches" and miscellaneous profanities abound. And it might not be officially available where you live - the original copyright owners are reportedly unhappy with its release. Further info: djdangermouse.com Gerry Smith
