23/02/2004 On Air this week: Johnny Cash, Ralph Stanley, Jim Moray, Van Morrison, Artie Shaw
There are several mouth-watering broadcasts on Brit TV and radio TV this week, notably Friday's broadcast of the recent Barbican concert by Dylan's father figure, bluegrass great Ralph Stanley. Fri 27 Feb, 11.05, BBC1: Johnny Cash - the Last Great American. Very promising new profile (just ignore the silly sub-title) Fri 27 Feb, 12.05, BBC4: Later Presents Johnny Cash, the perfect follow-up, with live performance Fri 27 Feb, 9.00 (repeated 12.35), BBC4: Celtic Connections. Well worth taping to catch folk sensation Jim Moray, and to ensure that you miss Ms Baez. But how do they qualify as Celtic? Friday 27 Feb, 10.00 (repeated 1.35), BBC4: Ralph Stanley, Live at the Barbican (from the late 2003 concert) Sat 28 Feb, 9.00, BBC Radio 2: Breaking the Barricades - the story of Ulster Rock (first in new series: from Van Morrison's Them and the Undertones, to Stiff Little Fingers and Snow Play). BBC4's programming is rapidly establishing it as the TV channel of choice for grown-ups, with peerless music programming of an eclectic range of genres, especially on Friday evenings (repeated Saturday). It's well worth buying a £60 Freeview box to receive BBC4 alone.
