16/02/2004 On Air this week: new blues series; The Tempest (new opera); Brit (pop) Awards; Brian Kennedy, Cara Dillon
A quiet week for grown-ups on UK TV and radio: Tuesday 17: 9.30pm: BBC Radio 2: second part of George Melly's Memories of the Blues. First episode, last week, exceeded my (low) expectations. Worth catching. Tuesday 17: 8pm: ITV1: Brit Awards. It's rare to see so much disposable pap assembled all together in a single broadcast; wall-to-wall celeb show biz gush, with tiny sample of grown-up music content. Worth taping in the hope of catching any of a handful of nominees: Bowie, Radiohead, Primal Scream, Beck, White Stripes, and OutKast. Wednesday 18: 7.25pm: BBC Radio 3: The Tempest, broadcast of Thomas Ades's highly rated brand new opera, live from the Royal Opera House. Friday 20: 9pm: BBC 4: Ulster favourites, popster Brian Kennedy and folkie Cara Dillon, in concert from Belfast. Gerry Smith
