Van Morrison, Tom Jones, and jazz performance (Feedback)

In the last issue of the Music for Grown-Ups newsletter (you can subscribe via the box to the left), I asked:

Many readers will remember the superb duet that Van Morrison recorded with Tom Jones for Sometimes We Cry, the single taken from the Jones album, Reload. A reader from the US asks whether Morrison's collaboration on a much earlier Tom Jones album also included any vocals?

I vaguely remember Van Morrison's contribution as writing four tunes on the album and producing it, but I can't remember hearing any duets - though I have a foggy memory of seeing the two Celtic belters performing together on a black and white video. I'd be grateful if any reader could provide
details of Van Morrison's collaborations with Tom Jones: please email any info to: GerrySmith@musicforgrownups.co.uk

Thanks to all the readers who responded, including:

* Richard Smith: "As far as I can remember, Van contributed electric guitar to some of his own HTTS songs. They are surprisingly good covers. Years later, in interviews conducted to publicise Reload, Jones admitted that he had made a mistake at the time, as he regretted not having recorded an entire album of Van songs."

* Richard Perry: "Van produced 4 songs for Tom's 1991(-ish) album "Carrying a Torch"; they've only ever sung together for "Sometimes we Cry"; however on the video's for Tom singing "Not Feeling it Anymore" and "Carrying a Torch", Van is seen in the studio with Tom, and I think he actually plays guitar on the track."

* Cara Greenberg: "Well, they were both in the recent "Red White and Blues" segment of the Martin Scorsese-produced series that ran last fall on PBS TV in the U.S. Van was kind of in the background of a jam session; I think he sang briefly but he's not even in the discography. Jones was more prominent, and fabulous.

"Was altogether a great series - hope you get it in the UK sometime if you haven't already.

"Thanks for your newsletter. I always need new music to listen to in the car and you've given me lots of ideas. I'm going to order World Duets per your recommendation!"

(Scorsese's eagerly-awaited series starts in the UK, on BBC2 I think, very soon - watch this space. Ed)

* Allan Gill: "Van and Tom Jones did 2 songs on a promotional video for the Tom Jones CD that Van produced. They did Carrying A Torch and I'm Not Feeling It Anymore. The venue was the Townhouse Studios, London, 14 Feb 1991. Hope this helps."

Jurgen commented on my article on Van Morrison and jazz performance:

"Very true about the shows until mid-2000! Once, round 1999, I told a friend about my enthusiasm on Van and that guy, a tolerant jazz fan, asked, if this was "that pop singer".

"I was a bit disappointed about calling Van a pop musician. So I told him that you find his recordings in the pop department of the shops, but actually it is a kind of jazz. From that time on it became a running gag, when we spoke about Van: he said pop and I set up an angry face. After that we laughed.

"Maybe you know the recording of the Christmas Special 1998 in Düsseldorf (with Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Candy Dulfer - musicians you find in the jazz departments of the shops). And listen to the word "pop" Van uses in a spoken part of the "See Me Through" medley. The pronunciation tells a lot about how Van saw his relationship to pop music at that time.

"I agree with you, too, that his Blue Note CD is much closer to pop than most
of his earlier recordings."

Readers' responses are always welcome: please respond via the web site Feedback page.

Gerry Smith.
