Andrew Appleby Andrew's early interests lay in Archaeology hence the influences that affect his works. The skills of the past show through to the contemporary pieces by him. He is most willing to undertake original commissions, or simply sell from the wealth of his products. He is a most adept teacher who inspires his students with the beauty and drama of clay. A person with the will and no skill can learn from him the ways of fire and clay. "I booked my move to Orkney on 1st April 1976. For 10 years I had yearned to live in the isles. I scrimped and saved, chose a date, sold all unnecessary possessions and drove north from Kent. My new home was an old chicken house, 54 by 26ft of concrete walled, asbestos roofed, rugged bliss. The pottery began there on Fursbreck farm amongst beautiful scenery, good neighbours and now old friends. Two successful years later Fursbreck Pottery moved to the Old Harray School where, for the past 24 years, we have been making our famous ranges of completely hand thrown pottery. Our work is noted for its fineness, lightness and strength. Our colours are varied and kind on the eye. The pottery is oven, microwave and dishwasher friendly but the dinner and side plates should be warmed in hot water instead of an oven." You can contact Andrew via email at info@applepot.co.uk.
Sigrid Appleby Later she worked for a fine art gallery also in Edinburgh, and on moving to Orkney she started her own gallery business called the Black Pig. After marrying Andrew she has “devoted” herself to working with him in Orkney as well as France. Being Danish she has a keen eye for design.
